Norton 2013 to support Windows 8
Better firewall technology, smarter bandwidth monitoring, and Windows 8 compatibility are the hallmarks of the latest Norton betas, now available for download.
The Norton AntiVirus 2013 beta, Norton Internet Security 2013 beta, and Norton 360 v7 beta all include support for Windows 8, though the company has yet to reveal what the specific Windows 8 enhancements are. Savvy Symantec observers will note that Norton 360, usually a first-quarter release, has been moved to the company's fall schedule.
Norton has updated its firewall, too, so that it uses the suite's Insight analysis technology to detect and block suspicious Internet traffic coming from your computer that could be a hidden botnet.
Finally, Symantec has improved Norton's bandwidth monitoring, a growing necessity as Internet service providers expand and tighten data caps.

Microsoft to Roll out Free Windows 8 Update Later This Year
Even the people seem to have rejected
Windows 8. There have been numerous instances of people downgrading
their PCs from Windows 8 to Windows 7. Needless to say, the backlash has
been strong. So, it comes as no surprise that Microsoft is trying to
change the situation as much as it can. For this purpose, the company
had announced they were going to release a Windows 8 update before the
end of the year. Initially titled Windows Blue the update was intended
to rectify the problems Windows 8 was receiving criticism for.
Since then, the name for the update has been changed to Windows 8.1.
The purpose will remain the same, which is improving the Windows 8 user
experience. However, what this does not show is whether the update will
actually contribute towards stronger Windows 8 sales. Microsoft further
added to the intrigue by announcing recently that they intend to roll
out Windows 8.1 as a free update rather than with strings attached. This
means there is little chance it would boost the Windows 8 sales.Microsoft has been trying to project optimism as far as Windows 8 is concerned. The 100 million licenses sold, as an umbrella figure, have contributed immensely towards alleviating some of the doubts. However, some reports are showing that the number of licenses sold doesn’t represent the number of people actually using Windows 8 on their PCs. That number is close to 60 million if the reports are to be believed. This means that Microsoft has been banking its future chances on hope rather than solid performance.
Yet, one cannot help but say that 58 million is a huge number. If that many people are actually using Windows 8, there must be something good about it. As things stand, Windows 8.1 will be available to Windows 8 users as a free update. They simply need to download and install the update to upgrade their version of Windows 8. However, there are no certainties regarding whether people will actually want to download it, even if it is available for free. After all, there are not many changes which are being spoken of before the update is actually revealed.
Microsoft wants to get more people to use Windows 8. That much is clear from the actions the company has taken over the past few months. Providing an update free of cost, and that too Windows 8.1, seems like a desperate measure to get people to use their operating system.
Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Helps Microsoft Regain Browser Market Share
The
browser wars continues, with browsers being updated and upgraded for
the new operating systems as well as made available on older ones. This
was the case with the Internet Explorer (IE) 10 released for the Windows 7
platform. Originally designed for Windows 8, Microsoft eventually
decided to release it for the older version of their operating system as
well. A month has gone by since it was made available, along with
Google Chrome 26 and Mozilla Firefox 20. A look at the numbers for each
browser clearly show which browser is winning.
- Google Chrome – 39.15%
- Internet Explorer – 29.71%
- Mozilla Firefox – 20.06%
- Safari – 8%
- Opera – 1.01%
Talking about IE10 specifically, the browser did get a boost from its release on Windows 7. Its market share nearly tripled, reaching 6.20% while having been at 2.26% at the end of March. This adversely affected IE9, which fell by 2.45%. What is interesting to note is that at 13.35%, the market share of IE9 is solid but the fall it experienced is it’s biggest for some time. It still remains the second-most widely used browser version across the world after Chrome 26, which is at 32.13%.
Overall, this shows that IE10 is taking users away from IE9 rather than convincing more people to switch from Chrome or Firefox to IE. Since XP users don’t have the option of moving beyond IE8, this impact is mainly felt by Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. Like IE, Firefox also had released a new version of the browser, Firefox 20. Firefox 20 managed to capture a 9.47% market share in just the first month of its release, which shows that it is in more demand than the latest IE version.
Firefox 20 was the only version of the browser to gain, naturally since it was in its first month. For some reason, Firefox 16 actually managed to improve its market share. The biggest loser was Firefox 19 which lost nearly 10% of its market share. When it comes to Chrome, version 25 was naturally the one that
lost the most market share as it was number one before Chrome 26 came along. Its market share was over 32% but it stood at less than 2% at the end of April. What this shows is that even if IE10 is becoming more popular after being launched on Windows 7, it is doing little to regain popularity for what was once the world’s favorite browser. Chrome and Firefox have become more popular and in demand than Internet Explorer, which effectively means that IE islosing the browser war.
Since it was announced, Windows Blue has functioned like a carrot on a stick for Windows 8 users
who have had complaints about the operating system. Well, that may very
well be majority of the users, but Windows has never been a stranger to
complaints anyway. It is quite expected then, that Microsoft quickly
came up with an update that was supposed to address those
concerns. Initially labelled Windows Blue, Microsoft has decided to
launch the more appropriately named Windows 8.1 update in June this
year.
There’s even better news. Windows 8.1 is going to be a free upgrade. Current Windows 8 users will be able to gain access to the upgrade from the home screen, that is, when Windows 8.1 launches. Don’t hold your breath for when that happens, though, as no details about the release date have been announced.
You might want to mark your calendar, specifically June 26, as this is going to be the date when a preview version is going to be made available to the public.
Considering that there has been so much noise about Windows Blue – in spite of the fact that all we had to go on were rumors – the news that Windows Blue is dead in the water should satisfy many an armchair critic. From bringing back the Start button (optional) to providing the capability to boot to the desktop – these rumored features have given pundits fodder.
Now we don’t know if these features are going to make it to the renamed Windows 8.1, but this move of Microsoft’s might just be a good thing for the much maligned operating system.
What do you think about this change of heart?

Acer’s 8.1 inch Windows 8 Tablet Iconia W3 Is Now Official
Early this month there was already a rumor that Acer was working on an 8.1 inch Windows 8 tablet. This was further strengthened when the device briefly appeared over at Amazon but was immediately taken down. It then resurfaced a few days later after Denis Kutnikov, general director of Acer’s Russian office, said that it will be introduced this coming June 4.
The Acer Iconia W3 is now listed in the company’s Finnish site making it official. The tablet sports an 8.1 inch WXGA display, an Intel Atom Z2760 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 32/64 GB internal storage depending on the model. There’s also a 2 MP webcam included. The device will be pre-installed with Windows 8 Professional and it’s also likely that Windows Word will also be available right out of the box.
Acer describes the device as “The Iconia W3 with Windows 8 is a true multi-user tablet with easy access to personal apps and settings via live tiles, plus access to the Windows Store for even more. It syncs across all your Windows 8 devices, so what you need is always there. Plus, Windows 8 provides you with built-in security and parental controls.”
The device is said to have enough battery life to last up to 8 hours while watching 720p movies. This makes it a great entertainment device for travelers.
In the website the device is shown with a keyboard dock. We’re not sure if this will be included in the package or if it will be sold separately as an accessory. Having a keyboard accessory will definitely make it easier for people to work on their productivity software.
There’s still no exact date as to when this device will be released or how much it is going to cost. It will be featured in the Computex event next month where it’s likely that more information will become available.
While this device does not have the premium features of the Microsoft Surface Pro it will make a great introductory device for those looking for a Windows 8 tablet.

SBI wants one regulator for all lenders | ||
A STAFF REPORTER | ||
Calcutta, May 18: The State Bank of India today urged the Reserve Bank of India to act as a uniform regulator for all lending agencies, particularly the housing finance companies against whom the bank is competing for retail customers in the home loan segment.
“I see no justification of having a separate regulator. Perhaps the regulatory objectives would be better served if the RBI itself were to become the sole regulator for all lenders, including home loans,” SBI chairman Pratip Chaudhuri today said at an interactive session on banking organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
At present, housing finance companies such as HDFC, LIC Housing Finance, Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco) and others are regulated by the National Housing Bank under the guidelines laid down in the National Housing Bank Act, 1987.
Market observers feel that even as interest rates charged by banks are very close to that of housing finance companies, banks have a disadvantage because of its higher cost of borrowing. Banks have to mandatorily deposit a certain amount of cash reserve with the RBI. This may have prompted Chaudhuri to seek a common regulator.
“The RBI has kept the CRR unchanged at 4 per cent and it creates a burden for banks as such deposits with the apex banker do not earn any interest,” a senior bank official told the Telegraph.
“Unlike banks, housing finance companies are not mandated to park part of their deposits with the RBI as cash reserves. That is why even though the RBI has lowered its policy rates, many banks are reluctant to reduce their lending rates,” he added.
Chaudhuri had on several occasions expressed his concerns about CRR and had even urged the regulator to abolish it. Further, with rising bad debts and higher provisioning, the net interest margins that depends upon the difference between lending and borrowing rates come under pressure.
But why should the RBI heed the bank’s plea for unified rules?
Chaudhuri said, “Banks currently have two-third of the home loan market (in the country).”
He pointed out that the RBI had raised objections to the SBI’s dual rates on housing loan (tagged as teaser loans) introduced a few years back as it could lead to a subprime crisis similar to that of the US once customers are unable to afford higher EMIs as rates normalise.
“If a bank offers a slightly lower rate in the initial years and higher rate in later years it is called a teaser loan and they are required to make provisions for it... but should similar rules not be applied for other players in the home loan market?” Chaudhuri asked.
The SBI chief added that he has asked the regulator to lower the minimum tenure of deposits to three days from seven days to offer more short-term liquidity to borrowers.
“Right now there are no daily investment instruments whereas we have a shadow banking sector offering investment options for one day,” Chaudhuri said. “The liquidity risk of a three-day deposit was not different from that of a seven-day deposit. But why make banks handicapped?”
Shady schemes
Chaudhuri said the RBI as well as Sebi should kick start public awareness campaigns for depositors on the risk of investing in shady deposit mobilising companies. The bank chief said the regulators should consider campaigns such as the Jago Grahak Jago or hallmark in gold so that when investors put in their money they are assured that such deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation.
Margin pressure
Chaudhuri said the SBI would like to review its return on equity in overseas business as margins had come under pressure.
